IMG Fashion and VOGUE call upon designers to adhere to the casting standards of THE HEALTH INITIATIVE
IMG Fashion supports the initiative of VOGUE for a healthy body image
Berlin/Munich, 27th of June 2012. In leading up to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin (4th-7th of July 2012), IMG Fashion and German VOGUE have prepared a joint letter addressed to the designers presenting their shows in Berlin. The letter calls upon the designers to adhere to the industry standards and guidelines in view of the upcoming model castings.
The joint statement is based on “THE HEALTH INITIATIVE” launched by the Chief Editors of the 19 international issues of VOGUE in May 2012 - a global initiative which aims to promote a healthy body image and awareness within the fashion industry.
In this joint letter, IMG Fashion, producer and owner of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin as well as other global fashion events and properties, gives its support to “THE HEALTH INITIATIVE” and appeals to the designers to adhere to the principles of the initiative. These state that, along with the minimum age of 16 years, designers should only work with those models who convey a healthy body image. Furthermore, the standards prompt the provision of a positive and health-conscious working environment for the models at the fashion shows - including appropriate catering services and working hours for the models.
“The wellbeing and health of the models is of utmost importance to us. We therefore very much welcome this initiative by VOGUE. Accordingly, we expect the designers to act responsibly at their castings and during the shows and appeal to them to also support the initiative in the long term", comments Peter Levy, Managing Director and Senior Vice President of IMG Fashion Events and Properties.
“The support given by IMG Fashion is an important step in establishing the principles of our initiative in the industry. Models are role models for many women and are ambassadors for the entire fashion industry. It is therefore all the more important that they are also ambassadors of a healthy body image”, says Christiane Arp, Chief Editor of German VOGUE.
The six points of VOGUE’s international “THE HEALTH INITIATIVE” agreement are listed in full below.
About “THE HEALTH INITIATIVE”
VOGUE’s “THE HEALTH INITIATIVE” aims to ensure that models, who are role models for many women and convey the perception of ideal beauty, have good working conditions and are trained and supported in looking after their own health. Within the scope of the initiative, we have dealt with as many of the associated aspects and problems in the modelling industry as possible with the aim of finding solutions.
For this purpose, the 19 international Chief Editors of VOGUE have settled on an agreement containing six points:
1. We will not knowingly work with models under the age of 16 or who appear to have an eating disorder. We will work with models who, in our view, are healthy and help to promote a healthy body image.
2. We will ask agents not to knowingly send us underage girls and casting directors to check IDs when casting shoots, shows and campaigns.
3. We will help to structure mentoring programmes where more mature models are able to give advice and guidance to younger girls, and we will help to raise industry-wide awareness through education, as has been integral to the CFDA Health Initiative.
4. We will encourage producers to create healthy backstage working conditions, including healthy food options and a respect for privacy. We will encourage casting agents not to keep models unreasonably late.
5. We encourage designers to consider the consequences of unrealistically small sample sizes of their clothing, which limits the range of women who can be photographed in their clothes, and encourages the use of extremely thin models.
6. We will be vocal ambassadors for the message of healthy body image, both within the magazine and outside.
